Are you looking for ways to repurpose old paper? I don’t know about you, but in our house we go through a lot of paper. There’s computer paper, wrapping paper, scrapbook paper, not to mention anything we buy that ships in packing paper.
Thank goodness most of our books and magazines are on tablets now, or there would be even more paper to deal with. But there are ways to make use of old paper.
Since paper is a highly versatile material, there are many creative ways to reuse and repurpose old paper. Here are a few ideas.
Practical Uses For Old Paper
Packing material is expensive. Styrofoam for example costs quite a bit of money, as does bubble wrap. So, instead of shipping things with these materials, just re-use old paper – either shredded or crumbled to pack items safely for shipping.
Weed Control in the Garden
Putting a layer of old card stock or cardboard under mulch is ideal for weed control in gardens. Not only will it help with weed control naturally, but it will keep you from having to use a thicker layer of mulch.
Re-use Old Paper for Cleaning Glass
If you have old newspaper or packing paper of a a similar texture, use it to clean glass or mirrors. Paper is ideal for getting streaks off of glass, so it’s ideal for car windows, headlights, glass storm doors and mirrors.

Reuse Paper by Learning Origami
Learning origami takes a lot of paper and you’re going to make a lot of mistakes. Fortunately, you have all the paper you need if you reuse sheets of printer paper that are in your recycle bin.
Just get into the habit of using a recycle bin instead of a trash can and you’ll always have enough paper for origami and other crafts.
Make Confetti or Gift Basket Grass
Buying confetti or shredded paper for gift baskets can be really expensive. Instead, why not make your own? Repurpose old paper by running it through the shredder and you have confetti or gift basket grass easy and affordably for just about any celebration or gift.
Make Your Own Bookmarks
There are a few ways you can use old paper to make bookmarks. You can make your own bookmarks by painting over used paper. Or if you have smaller pieces of leftover scrapbook paper, you can use it to make very pretty ones.
You could also use small pieces of tissue paper to decoupage over card stock by using a small brush and a bit of Mod Podge.
Get in the habit of saving used paper that has a nice print or color ans dave them in a box to build up your crafting supplies for unique projects.
Teaching Kids Recycling and Repurposing
Kids sometimes have trouble understanding what recycling and repurposing really is, so the idea of turning something old into something new may seem a bit strange.
One great way to demonstrate the concept to them is to show them how it’s done. Get your kids involved in an afternoon of crafting with old paper and let them use their imaginations to see what they can come up with.
