This is a bread crumb and Parmesan cheese encrusted asparagus dish that we’ve been making in our family for many years. I remember my mom, sister-in-law and myself cooking this up for holidays and special occasions, so it always brings back great memories of family get-togethers.
Everyone seems to enjoy this Parmesan cheese encrusted asparagus side dish and it always goes fast. I love it because it’s an easy to prepare, one-skillet dish, that you simply layer the ingredients into. Plus, asparagus pairs so well with beef, chicken, fish or ham – it’s the perfect side dish for any meal!
I made this Parmesan encrusted asparagus recipe on Easter and photographed it with my niece, just before bringing it to the table to serve with a spiral ham. This was a rare Easter when just the ladies in my family were together at the beginning of the day, so we got to enjoy some girl time and catch up. Below is a picture of my two nieces, mom and sister out on my sun porch. It was such a beautifully warm day, we ended up putting on shorts and going outside to catch some sun.
This Parmesan crusted asparagus recipe starts with 1-1/2 cups of water and 2 pounds of asparagus, simmered in the skillet. The asparagus should only cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until tender. If you can buy thinner asparagus, they will be more tender with less cooking time, and taste so much better.
The photo above shows the cheese being layered onto the asparagus, but not yet melted. The Parmesan cheese usually melts without covering the skillet, but you can get it to melt faster by putting a glass lid on the pan.

If you have a large, deep skillet, you can fit two pounds of asparagus and the water into the pan to cook the whole batch of asparagus at once. But once you strain the water out, only prepare one pound at a time with the toppings, so that more asparagus spares get coated and encrusted.
One Skillet Parmesan Crusted Asparagus Recipe
2 – lbs. Asparagus
1-1/2 Cups water
2 – Tbsp. Olive oil
2 – Tbsp. Butter
2 – Teaspoons Minced garlic
2 – Tbsp. Panko or regular bread crumbs
2 – Tbsp. Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper to taste
- Chop 2 to 3″ off of the end of the asparagus stalks and place them in the skillet. Cover with water and bring to a simmer.
- Continue simmering until tender, then drain and remove from heat.
- Put half of the asparagus back in the pan and spread it out as much as you can.
- Spread 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 tablespoon of oil over the Asparagus.
- Sprinkle in one teaspoon of minced garlic.
- Then evenly coat the top of the asparagus with one tablespoon each of bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese.
- Add a dash of salt and pepper, and cook until melted well.
- Remove from skillet and place on a serving platter.
- Add the remainder of asparagus to the pan and repeat steps 4 through 8.
Once the Parmesan crusted asparagus is done, you can keep it warm on a plate warmer until ready to serve. Or simply heat in the microwave for 20 seconds.
